Bodybuilder Question of the Month~

Two part question~
There's the Hardgainer's system, Doggcrapp's system, Superslow training, One-set-to-failure, HIT, HIIT, The Bigger Faster Stronger system, etc.. you get the picture. It's making me dizzy! We all know that the rate and level of adaptation to weight training differs from person to person because we all have different genetic blueprints, but how does one go about finding a workout suited for them?!
1} Which body type are you Ectomorph, Endomorph or Mesomorph?
Definition descriptions by my friend Lil'Lifter~

Ectomorph: Sometimes refered to as a "hard gainer"
Positive: Stay lean and get lean easily
Negative: Have a harder time putting on mass

Endomorph: "huskey people"
Positive: Put on mass easier
Negative: Put on fat easily and it is harder for them to slim down.

Mesomorph: "bastards"
Positive: Put on mass easily and stay lean easily.
Negative: People will HATE you!
2} Which training system do you adhere to and what made you pick that particular training system to do?

MA Question of the Month~

I read up on several fighters prior to their full contact fights because I was told that every fighter has their own personal strategy, although it changes slightly depending on their opponents. I also wanted to learn which area was their strongest area, such as boxing, wrestling, etc.

Then I watched some of their fight videos and you could see some of their technique coming out, but most appeared to be extremely cautious and a little scared.

So I asked some of my fighter friends about it and they replied that when they are in the ring, they're petrified to get hit and they end up screwing things up because of their nerves. That's a reasonable answer considering it only takes one strong punch in the right spot and you're in la-la land.

How do you overcome fear so you're able to execute your strategy?

Back by popular demand! I posted this question about three months ago and received alot of PMs requesting a rerun. Since I still haven't asked it on every board, I'll be running it again in another three months.

MA Question of the Month~

I recently watched a movie called Blood Sport on TV.
To be honest, I turned it on mainly because I saw Jean Claude Van damme's name in the TV guide.

It was really good in my opinion. (except when the fights got ugly since I'm not big on violence and then I missed parts because I wasn't watching them punch each other.) Anyway, sections of the movie made me realize that the art, philosophy and spiritual aspects of MAs can't be learned through books or through just any of the many MA schools listed in the yellow pages. The disciplines are passed down from generation to generation by way of direct contact with someone truly knowledgeable. I have also been reading alot regarding MAs during the past year and I'm given the distinct impression that the philosophy behind the art teaches you NOT to fight.

*If that's true, why are there tournaments?
*Which MA do you practice and have you ever competed outside your training facility? If so, do you think the great masters of past are rolling over in their grave knowing you're competing for prize money and awards?

Martial Arts Question of the Month~

Question is compliments of CaptainPoohPant of Ironlife.com
Is MMA ever "too violent" for you?
I ask this because for the first time in years I've been going back and watching earlier UFC's that I loved back 3 or 4 years ago, but now I just find some of it too violent. As fight fans I guess we are desensitized to violence more than the average Joe, but was there or is there something in MMA that you think is too violent or that makes you uneasy?
Certain fights pop to mind, Gary Goodridge vs. Paul Herrara was one, that was just brutal, but one that stands out is Pat Smith vs. that one guy in I think UFC 2 where he kept repeatedly smashing him with forearms and the ref didn't do anything, luckily Pat Smith stopped the punishment himself. Maybe I'm getting soft in my old age but those particular fights make me uneasy as hell, it makes me almost feel guilty for watching. Thank god the reffing have improved tenfold over the years to the point where that kind of stuff just doesn't happen anymore and the fighter's safety is always top priority.
Currently the only thing that makes me uneasy is stomps in Pride while a guy is down, I think that needs to go. Soccer kicks are pretty crazy but I think they are fair game. What are your opinions on it?

Includes responses from:

Blade Runner - Member @ www.IronLife.com
No. Only fight that ever really bothered me was Dave Beneteau vs. Asbel Cancio in "UFC 5." Dave was reigning down punches, and Cancio had been tapping for at least 15 seconds before the dumb-ass amateur ref stopped it. THAT was brutal. The ref was on the wrong side to see the tap and Dave didn't see it either. He got in another 10 or 15 punches, HARD!

Bodybuilding * Weight lifting Question of the Month~

'Your Personal Best' responses were collected from Twenty-Nine people at the end of October and they appeared in Issue 16 of the Ironlife eZine.
The unique thing about this particular question, everyone was asked to make a prediction as to where they would improve most in their training over six month's time. I contacted the same people again in April via PM's and allowed until the end of May for their replies..

The Original Question
Your Personal Bests
Age:
Height:
Weight:
Years Training:

What's your record lifts to date in any or all of the following?
Deadlift
Squat
Bench

Straight bar curl
Out of the five, which do you predict you'll see the most improvement within 6 months?

The Update Question
Kindly tell us how your training has been going over the past six months.
Did your prediction come true?

Marie Colangelo Interview {Pro Fighter}

http://www.ironlife.com/mag/issue24...colangelo.shtml

~*~

Martial Arts Question of the Month~

Question is compliments of 92Stangman~
How would you deal with a street fight situation?
A few people have implied how you can end a fight quickly if they were ever dealt one in a street. Since there are a lot of tough and smart guys on here, wanted to ask what you all would do.

Would you stand up, box, kick, clinch, etc. or would you shoot in and take the other person to the ground? What if you got the guy in an arm bar, would you let him tap or say I give and *hope* he leaves, or go through and break the joint? If I wasn't on an adrenaline high, I may not break the guy's arm but then again, he could come back at me the second time and I may not be as lucky to get in a good position. With everything going on and the guy came off as a really big threat, I may go through with it. Choking out is no problem because they're out long enough for you to get away and when they wake up, they won't know where the hell they are.

Also, my buddy and I got into this discussion today about whether we would pull guard in on the street. He said that he would and I said I'd rather not. If I did end up in guard, I'd would look to sweep and go into mount if a quick armbar or triangle wasn't there.

I've never been in a street fight before so I don't know how exactly I would handle it. Only practice I've had is sparring with my team mates but it's been two months since because I quit to focus more on lifting. My only guess is that I would trade punches for a few seconds, shoot in and then go from there. Whether I end up in sidemount where I control his upper body and knee him in the side a few times, then go into mount and move my position up to finish it.

But like the old saying goes, everyone has a plan till they get hit.
Thanks

BODYBUILDING*WEIGHT TRAINING QUESTION OF THE MONTH

Do you find it hard to bite your tongue?
Question ~ compliments of Short Stack

Have any of you ever found yourself struggling not to say something to people about issues you see with the same people every time you go to the gym?
Granted I have tons to learn, but I feel like I have a lot of important basics under my belt like avoiding over training, and although I don't pound out 400 pound bench press I do keep great form on most of my lifts.
I see these two kids every time I go to the gym. They are bigger than me, but definitely not in muscle build or strength. I never see them doing anything but bench press, and doing a horrible job at it.
With 185 on the bar they are letting it slam down on their chests, and they fight their asses off just to get it back up for a rep or two. No form at all, and the spotter is getting the bent over row workout from hell. No control, I wouldnt be surprised if I saw these kids break their sternums!!
They are over-training, their form is dangerous!!!
Should I ask them what their goals are or would I be overstepping my boundaries? I really want to tell these two guys they are only going to hurt themselves.
There are some other people at the college gym that I find myself wanting to say something too, but these guys are the two stand outs.

BODYBUILDING*WEIGHT TRAINING QUESTION OF THE MONTH

What's your opinion of this article?
Question compliments of bmass' JunkYardDog

The 10 Basic Rules of Mass
By Chris Cormier

This article was written by Chris Cormier, and featured in Flex Magazine, May 1995 issue.
Mass is no mystery. Attaining it is quite simple and straightforward. All you have to do is bust your gut and apply the following 10 basic rules.

1. Use Free Weights for all Heavy Sets
As heavy as some machines might feel, they do not involve as much of the ancillary muscles areas as do free weights and, therefore, do not build as much compound mass.

2. Utilize Compound Movements
How you perform an exercise is perhaps the most important dynamic in building mass. If you want full, hard bulk, do not isolate. Instead, use what Dave Draper calls 'body thrust' to compound the involvement of all the muscles in the area. Also, don't fall for the theory that cheating robs you of separation. On the contrary, it augments the compound benefit and builds even greater size so that there's more muscle in which to carve separations.

3. Find areas of improvement
Assess your physique to determine which muscle groups need to be brought up in size, then go to the gym with that in mind, concentrating on working those areas first. Begin your workout with a barbell movement and follow with dumbbells. If you use cables, do so at the end of your workout. Never count cable sets as muss building sets.

4. Experiment to find your best mass building exercises
I used to perform lots of squats, and I became incredibly strong with them, going as high as 40 reps with 315 pounds. But there came a point where, even at that level of intensity, my legs weren't growing to my satisfaction. I discovered that my lower back and hips were taking too much of the stress; the solution lay in working my quads more exclusively. I therefore stopped squatting and switched to leg presses and hack squats instead. My legs are now better than ever.

5. Avoid injuries
Be wary of dangerous exercises. Squats and flat bench presses, for example, possess the highest injury potential, so I stay away from them. I can't count the number of individuals whose bodybuilding careers were ended by torn pecs, slipped discs or strained erectors. With proper knowledge and execution, you can get commensurate or even better growth from exercises that work those muscle groups thoroughly without placing undue stress on tendons and ligaments.

6. Utilize optimum sets
Use a range of 16 - 20 total sets per bodypart.

7. Don't count exercises
There is no optimum number of exercises. Most bodybuilders prescribe four sets each of four or five different exercises per bodypart, but for some muscle groups, there might be only one or two movements that work them effectively. In those cases, you should do 16 - 20 sets of one exercise, or 8 - 10 sets each of two exercises.

8. Perform optimum reps
I like to train heavy, but I also like to use lots of reps. I recently performed incline barbell curls with 405 pounds for 10 reps, but I consider that to be medium to light weight, and, therefore, not mass training. My favorite number of mass reps on a regular basis is 10, to failure, of course. However, that doesn't mean you should avoid going as heavy as possible now and then.

9. Flirt with maximums
Check out your strength levels every so often by maxing out with one or two reps. Remembers, though, that any time you play around with benchpress poundages above 405, you flirt with danger. The body cannot consistently take that type of training. When you want to test your max, do not take big jumps. Rather, work up gradually to keep your body accustomed to the changing forces and their deflections at each level. For example, I go up to 500 pounds for two reps on the incline barbell press, but I do not jump directly from 405 to 500. Instead, I make sure I can do 465 for at least four reps before I go to my max.

10. Eat your meat
The more protein you eat, the better, and the best form of protein for mass is meat, especially red meat. That's where you get your muscle building nutrients, your strength reserves and the necessary fats for joint protection. Make all of these tenets second nature to your bodybuilding lifestyle and you will gain good solid mass.
